the southwestern rattler

the southwestern rattler,
the diamond back,
croatalus and sistrurus to be exact,
we step with care in the brush,
out here, out there,
especially in the dark,
under shade
of manzanita bush,
unless of course we spot one
covered in hardened petroleum jell
infused with adobe-amber or desert rose,
even of the lighter pink-ish tones,
slightly bulging, radically foreshortened,
perfectly smooth,
no scales;
those ones are fine
to lift and to shake,
we do,
we play them, they're quite melodic
and tame.
